Message from Dr. David Ostrow, President and CEO

As you may know, the coast of British Columbia is the region most at risk from a major earthquake in Canada. In a densely populated urban area even a magnitude six earthquake could do extensive damage. It is important that individuals, and work teams prepare for major earthquakes and practice how to protect themselves.

All of us in health care know the impact an earthquake can have and the demand it places on our health care services and on us personally. On Thursday October 18, 2012 Vancouver Coastal Health will participate in Shake Out BC, the largest earthquake drill in Canadian history. Your support will help to make this a successful awareness campaign.

If you are able, I encourage you to participate in the 2-minute Shake Out earthquake safety practice session by joining your colleagues and dropping under a desk or table, take cover and hold on for two minutes; the time it takes for the shaking to stop during an earthquake.

Visit www.shakeoutbc.ca to learn more about earthquake safety and to register your personal commitment.
