Public Health will be surveying North Shore residents beginning this weekend to get a better understanding of the community’s population’s general health and well-being and the child and family friendliness of these communities. Students from North Shore high schools will be volunteering as surveyors at public spaces around the community, such as rec centres, libraries, Safeway stores and Lions Gate Hospital.
Residents, aged 18 and older, from North and West Vancouver, Bowen Island and Lions Bay will be asked about:
- household characteristics (food security, dwelling type)
- neighborhood characteristics (community belonging, transportation)
- socio-demographic characteristics (employment status, ethnicity)
- and individual health and wellness (lifestyle, adverse health issues).
VCH staff who live in these communities are eligible to complete the survey.

Survey results
This survey will help both the health authority and North Shore municipalities set priorities and allocate resources, contributing to health improvements, reductions in inequalities and more efficient use of health care and municipal dollars.
The survey will also gauge the child and family friendliness of these communities.
Survey data will be presented to the North Shore Congress, a group of stakeholders which works together on shared issues that influence health, social well being and sustainability of North Shore residents, in early 2013. In October 2011, North Shore Congress’s Child and Family Friendly Community Charter was signed which positions early childhood development as a collective responsibility between parents, all levels of government, school boards, health care providers, business and community agencies. The North Shore Wellness survey results will support the monitoring and evaluation of this charter.

The survey takes 15 minutes to complete. The survey closes December 16, 2012.
