Duncan Campbell

Duncan Campbell has been a visionary and a leader of environmental stewardship, championing and funding innovative solutions across the organization to build a sustainable healthcare model.

During his five years as Chief Financial Officer and VP, Systems Development & Performance at Vancouver Coastal Health, Duncan Campbell was responsible for a wide range of areas including Financial Services, Legal Services, Privacy, Decision Support, Business Initiatives & Support Services, Internal Audit, Facilities & Property Management and Transformation.

Supporting GreenCare Initiatives

As an advocate of the work done by the Energy and Environmental Services (EES) team, Duncan has sponsored major GreenCare initiatives and projects, including:

  1. Recycling Renewal Program: Materials Waste was ranked as the most important environmental issue for all four health organizations, by those health authority employees surveyed in the You & the Environment Survey. As a result, Duncan Campbell provided significant support for the Recycling Renewal Program; funding the original Reduction & Recycling Coordinator position, ensuring progress was made to roll out the standardized recycling renewal program across the lower mainland. Funding covers bins, lids, signage, education and marketing materials, as well as negotiating all the recycling contracts and auditing programs once they are set-up.
  2. Energy Conservation Projects: Duncan was a big supporter of energy conservation, directing funding towards projects that supported energy savings and raising staff awareness. His team spearheaded the establishment of regular energy-focused reporting to senior management and required all requests for funding to consider energy consumption. These strategies make energy efficiency a high-profile part of Vancouver Coastal Health’s business operations.
  3. Sustainable Transportation: Duncan offered support for electrical vehicle charging stations and was active in modeling carbon neutral commuting, joining a Clean Commuter Challenge team in 2012, and supporting new bike cages and the Commuter Centre at VCH.
  4. Food and Land: Duncan championed Sodexo’s efforts to implement a pilot “sustainable café” – the Corner Café at UBCH is implementing sustainable practices in every area of the retail spectrum, from food production to waste. As Duncan noted,  “the Lower Mainland Health Authorities currently produce a greater amount of food waste than what we would like. This initiative is a great example of how food production, distribution and consumption can be a sustainable endeavor.” As well, Duncan worked closely with Business Initiative Support Services (BISS) to implement food services recycling and composting. Now 49 sites across the Lower Mainland have either organics (food) diversion or onsite (food) decomposers.
  5. GreenCare Community / C3: As an Executive Sponsor of GreenCare’s C3 community, Duncan advocated authentic staff engagement and grassroots leadership. He supported the C3 Community as a way to help build this collaborative effort towards a truly sustainable health care system and a place for all staff to learn and create a more resilient health care model.

Special thanks from the EES Team

Mauricio Acosta, Director of Energy & Environmental Sustainability (EES), provides leadership and strategic direction to energy management and environmental sustainability activities throughout the Lower Mainland Health Authorities.

“The role of healthcare leaders and executives is to provide the tools and resources that will support healthcare staff to achieve greater conservation at work and take opportunities to improve our workplace and make it more sustainable. GreenCare’s initiatives and projects are steps in this journey and demonstrate that the Health Authorities are taking actions towards understanding our environment as it is linked to healthy lives. Our efforts with GreenCare are made possible by leadership that supports these values. Duncan Campbell has shown tremendous leadership in GreenCare initiatives. His desire to create a sustainable organization is evident and we are grateful to have had his vision to grow sustainable solutions for healthy lives and healthy communities.”

Duncan, we could not have accomplished all that we have without your vision, drive and determination. A big thank you and very best wishes from the Energy & Environmental Sustainability team!
