CST review leads to timing changes for Coastal sites

A comprehensive review of the Clinical and Systems Transformation (CST) project plan has resulted in a change in the timing of the first VCH-Coastal sites to “go live.”

“The review gave us a much clearer picture of what will be required to confidently activate the new Cerner clinical information system,” says Acting Chief Transformation Officer Michael Long. “Although we are making good progress on the project, we came to the conclusion that more time and work are required to ensure a successful activation at Group 1 sites.”

This means the first activation of the new system at LGH campus and Sea-to-Sky facilities will not take place in spring 2017, as previously planned. CST project leaders are working with VCH-Coastal to put together a revised implementation schedule and will set a new Coastal/Group 1 target activation date in early 2017. The CST team is also consulting with BC Cancer Agency, Children’s & Women’s Hospitals and other groups to understand all the implications of the change and revise the implementation schedule accordingly.

The extension means the CST and Coastal/Group 1 teams and service groups have more time to complete all the work that is needed ahead of implementing CST at a site. This includes: identifying and training peer support; working with staff and physicians to test the design as it evolves; educating and training physicians, providers and clinicians; implementing Front End Speech Recognition for physician dictation; hosting demos on the clinical information system; IT infrastructure updates; improving medication management processes through the new Vancouver Pharmacy Production Centre; and making the clinical practice and policy changes that will define our standard of care.

Group 1 sites consist of Lions Gate Hospital campus (Lions Gate Hospital, the HOpe Centre, Evergreen House and North Shore Hospice) and Sea-to-Sky facilities (Squamish General Hospital, Hilltop House, Whistler Health Centre, Pemberton Health Centre) as well as Radiology at Sechelt Hospital, Bella Coola General Hospital and RW Large Memorial Hospital in Bella Bella.
