On January 10, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation received a $50,000 donation from natural gas company Spectra Energy in support of burn and wound healing research.  Led by Dr. Aziz Ghahary, the Burn and Wound Healing Research Laboratory at VGH is internationally respected for their innovative discoveries that, and will continue to, improve the lives of patients with serious burns and wounds due to trauma, ulcers or surgery.  In the last three years, Spectra’s support to this area has totalled over $150,000 and contributed towards ground breaking research and equipment to help adults in BC with the most serious burn and trauma injuries.

This gift has enabled the purchase of a Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) machine, essential in determining the viability and efficacy of specific skin and immune cells involved in the process of burn and wound healing. Since receiving the FACS machine in August 2012, the lab has greatly utilized it and has already generated enough data to publish three articles.

VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation thanks Spectra Energy for helping ensure excellence in the area of burn and would healing research.
