Steps you can take to prevent accidental fire

In light of recent hot dry weather and the forecast of more to come, HEMBC Fire Safety would like to remind all staff of additional steps that should be taken in preventing accidental outdoor fires.  In the past two weeks a number of small fires have already occurred at several sites prompting responses from both staff and local fire departments.

With increased temperatures and dry conditions, the risk of ignition and fire spread is significant.  Please take the following precautions, be aware of your surroundings and call 9-1-1 to report your location if you discover a fire:

  • Cigarettes should be disposed of properly in non-combustible ashtrays or completely extinguished in water or sand. Staff are reminded that smoking is not permitted anywhere on Health Authority property and should be done in a safe location away from potential fire hazards such as decks, fences, mulch and dry vegetation.  Staff should also remind patients and visitors that smoking is not permitted anywhere on the facility’s premises and if possible suggest a more suitable location.
  • Avoid parking in areas where long grass and weeds are present. Hot exhaust systems can easily ignite dry grass and weeds beneath the vehicle.
  • Avoid welding, grinding or mowing near dry weeds or grass.
  • Ensure electrical cords are in good working order and are not damaged, frayed or show signs of wear prior to connecting to an electrical source.
  • Fires can smoulder for hours in bark mulch and dry vegetation before actual flames are visible. Investigate and report signs of smoke and extinguish as necessary using generous amounts of water.

If you have any questions or require further information please feel free to contact Fire Safety.
