More than 2600 children from across Richmond created bookmarks for Richmond Public Health’s 2013 bookmark contest “Feeling good being me”, a slogan inspired by the latest Actions Schools! BC resource, Being Me: Promoting Positive Body Image.

Over 2,669 school age children from 45 public and independent schools submitted entries this year. The creative designs of eight students, representing grades kindergarten to grade 7 were chosen as winners. Themes captured included drawing activities with family & friends, reading a book, doing art, being active, sharing with others and just hanging out. Each of the eight students receives a Chapters Bookstore $75 gift certificate. Over 30,000 bookmarks have been widely distributed throughout Richmond.

The winning bookmarks were displayed earlier this month at the Richmond Public Library, Brighouse Branch, together with children’s books on self esteem and body image recommended by Kate Adams, the Kids’ Place librarian. To encourage viewers to reflect on this year’s theme, “Feeling good being me” mirrors are on display with the winning bookmarks.

Since 2005, VCH- Richmond has worked in partnership with Richmond School District, City of Richmond, Richmond Public Library, and Richmond Children First to offer this opportunity for children to learn about health as well as showcase their creative talents to our community. For more information about the contest, or to request bookmarks, please contact Joyce Henry, Public Health Nurse, at 604-233-3209 or joyce.henry@vch.ca .
