1-7-7: That’s the record number of babies born in the Birth Centre. Members of the Maternity Team are congratulated by Mike Nader, new COO for Richmond and Dr. Jonathan Fenton, senior medical officer.

One hundred and seventy seven babies were born in the Birth Centre at Richmond Hospital during the most recent 28-day reporting period. Last year, between 120 and 135 babies were born during each reporting period so this represents a significant increase.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, physicians, midwives and care providers for all the extra effort and long hours that you put in to provide high levels of quality care for the families who visited our Birth Centre. Thank you for your high degree of competency, compassion, teamwork, commitment to safety and quality, tireless effort, and good humor during these past few weeks! A special thank you also goes to our allied health and support services. It has truly been a team effort!
The Birth Centre at Richmond Hospital offers 15 single-room maternity care rooms, a maternity-specific operating room and recovery area, and a six-bed neonatal intensive care unit. Single-room maternity care means mothers, babies and families are able to stay together in the same private room during the labour, delivery and post-partum period. It also provides for improved infection control, more secure surroundings, better promotion of breastfeeding and, as a result, improved health outcomes for mothers and babies.
