VCH doctors recognized with some of the country’s top honours
Dr. Max Cynader is clearly excited about the field of brain research.
“People are starting to realize that diseases that affect the brain are really impacting society,” says the director of the VCH and UBC’s Brain Research Centre. “Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, stroke, depression – they’re each huge societal challenges. And that’s why I’m so passionate…it’s a field where I have the opportunity to help a lot of people.”
Dr. Cynader was recently recognized for his passion in neuroscience by being inducted to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame – an honour only given to six people this year and to only 101 since 1994.
But he’s not the only VCH doctor who has been recognized for his important work. Dr. Charles H. Scudamore, a cancer researcher, transplant surgeon and teacher, was given the Order of British Columbia. A staff surgeon at VGH, Dr. Scudamore is leader in cancer treatment, liver transplants, and hepatobiliary oncology and trauma – he’s the director of the B.C. Liver Transplant Program.
Dr. Cynader says it’s a great feeling to be recognized for work he loves doing.
“It is an honour,” he says. “Looking at the other inductees, I’m very pleased to be in such distinguished company; I’m pretty excited.”
