Dr. Andrei Krassioukov, research clinician with ICORD spinal cord research program at VCH Research Institute and UBC and physician at GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, has been elected as a Fellow to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) in honour of his extensive contributions to spinal cord research.
Fellows of the Academy are elected on the basis of their demonstrated leadership, creativity, distinctive competencies, and commitment to advance academic health sciences. Membership is considered one of the highest honours for members of the Canadian health sciences community and carries with it a covenant to serve the Academy and Canadian society. A formal induction ceremony took place in Ottawa at the CAHS Annual General Meeting on September 20th.
For over 20 years, Dr. Krassioukov’s research has been devoted to helping people with spinal cord injury (SCI) maintain their cardiovascular health. At the beginning of his career, studying the effect of SCI on the cardiovascular system was not seen as an important area of research by many, with most of the focus being placed on curing paralysis. Since then, Dr. Krassioukov has made many contributions to cardiovascular health in SCI, including the development of a multi-disciplinary laboratory that is internationally known for various clinical and basic science innovations.
