CST update for week of April 28
Clinical & Systems Transformation (CST) is one of the biggest healthcare projects in BC’s history. To give you a sense of the size of the change, CST will have a potential impact on the work of over 30,000 employees across three Health Organizations.
Pulse
The Design, Build, and Integrate phase of CST will be completed by the summer of 2015. In September 2015, we’ll be introducing the system and processes, developed in collaboration with the three Health Organizations, across hospital sites in a coordinated way; a few hospitals at a time.
The coordinated rollout provides opportunities for continuous improvement. Testing will be conducted at various sites to evaluate how the system is working and how staff will manage the new, evidence-informed clinical practices. A clinical practice is a process that has an impact on patient care; for example, the administration of medication.
Please visit CSTproject.ca for information about the project and its phases.
Design
The clinical design teams are in their fourth week. The Provider Team is due to start in two weeks on May 15.
An important clinical practice that the design teams are looking at is closed loop medication management. Closed loop medication includes barcode scanning for drugs and linking those drugs to an electronic health record. How we use and administer medication on the ground is one of the most complex processes in healthcare.
With this complexity comes risk for error. Closed loop medication management will work to decrease this risk and increase patient safety. Moving toward a closed loop medication process involves a wide range of activities. These include, among others, evaluating the current processes, creating a vision for what the new process will look like, design, testing, and identifying the equipment and devices required.
Ultimately, we’re working together to improve our processes and finding solutions to existing issues to provide better, safer care for British Columbians.
