Catch-us if you can!
The challenge: Women of health care’s Energy & Environmental Sustainability (EES) team have issued a challenge to the EES men to see who has the cleanest commute in this year’s Clean Commuter Challenge , which runs from May 26th – June 13th.
Olive Dempsey, Green+Leader Coordinator, had this to say, “We know it’s going to be a close competition, but we think we have the edge over our colleagues on the EES team.”
Team Work
With the team name, Too Cool for Cars (TC4C), this group is set to give the other teams a run for their money, so to speak. They include; 2-cyclists, 2-transit users and 3 mixed-use commuters, who mainly cycle, walk, take transit or hop in a Car2Go. The transit users both come from far afield – One transit user comes from New Westminster (Queen’s Park area) and walks, then takes a bus, then a skytrain, then another bus to work & back. She also uses transit to drop her daughter at daycare, meaning that her car is off the road during the week.
Eiselle Omampo is the Transportation Demand Management & Commuter Choices Coordinator for VCH, PHSA, PHC and FH. She also takes transit to work and refers to her family as “the walking family”, as they are one of the few in their neighbourhood who live without a car. “We walk or take transit to do our errands. I think our home is the only one without a vehicle in the driveway, and we are doing fine,” explains Omampo.
Collectively, the team is going to use the 3-week challenge as a way to reduce emissions, while also getting more active and fit for summer, rain or shine!
The Competition
“Even though the men on the EES team are impressive; with one marathon runner, another who has completed the ride to conquer cancer, and another who already rides to work most days, we still believe that we are the clear winners when it comes to stylish, no-car, active commuting!”, says Alexandra Turnbull, GreenCare Communications Coordinator.
Are the 8 men on the EES team ready for the Clean Commuter Challenge? Will they be able to leave their cars at home and look for alternatives? Will they log their commutes?! Keep your eye on the GreenCare site over the next couple of weeks to hear more.
