Diagnosed with a brain tumour in March 2014, Steve Allanson knows all about the importance of compassion in health care.

VIDEO: Everyone has a story. What’s yours?

When Steve Allanson speaks, he commands your attention. He’s not afraid to say what’s on his mind. And he always speaks from his heart.

On January 28, the former VGH patient did just that at our first Vancouver Leaders’ Forum of the year.

The theme of the day was “Leading with Passion” and the discussion was centred around our shared Vancouver Leadership Team Values.

Leading with passion

Our Vancouver Leadership Team Values aren’t new. And they’re not just for leaders. They speak to who we are and what we fundamentally believe in, and they’re a reflection of the leader in all of us, whether we’re working at the bedside or in a supporting role. Our Vancouver Leadership Team Values simply capture in a concise, focused way what we already see every day across our Community of Care.

Five years have passed since we became One Vancouver and in that time we’ve been challenged in many ways — and accomplished even more. Our team’s reputation as passionate, values-driven health care professionals is well earned and at the heart of our outstanding accreditation achievements, performance results and care we provide our shared patients and clients.

Our Vancouver Leadership Team Values also align with our new VCH leadership competencies, as introduced by President and CEO Mary Ackenhusen at the True North Forum on January 30.

A story of compassion

At the Vancouver Leaders’ Forum, Susan Harrison-Salt, patient services manager and Steve Allanson’s lifelong friend, interviewed  the former patient about his patient journey at VGH — a story that exemplifies our values at work and the positive difference we make across Vancouver every day.

Following Steve, the line between staff and patient/client blurred as audience members began sharing their personal stories and patient experiences.

What’s your story?

We’ve all been a patient at some point. What was your experience? How did it exemplify (or not) our values at work?

Share your story and shed light on your patient experience by scrolling to the bottom of this article. There, you can enter your story in the comment box. We look forward to hearing from you.

On a lighter note

At the Vancouver Leaders’ Forum, the audience was brought to tears on more than one occasion — and sometimes in laughter. Two laugh-out-loud videos featuring Vancouver leaders were shown for the first time, and today we share them with you. Enjoy!
