Dear EFAP: I won the lottery

Thank you to those who have written to “dear efap” for input on your dilemmas. As you are aware, we read every inquiry that comes in but we are only able to print a small selection of responses. Our “pithy” answers are modeled after the lighter hearted Dear Abby style and are grounded in common sense. If your issues require a more personalized level of support please call EFAP (1-800-505-4929) and we can confidentially book you a counselling appointment with a senior level therapist.

We want your questions

We welcome all inquiries – please submit these to dear.efap@efap.ca. All printed responses use the anonymous descriptor that you sign your inquiry with and do not reveal any identifying information. Our goal is to support you through insight and common sense.

Below is our response to the next selection – enjoy!
Dear-EFAP-picture1Good news – I won the lottery! Albeit was a small one, but I won. Yeah… I think? I am completely freaked out about money. I know nothing about it, I only know how to spend it: unwisely. I also have no idea what I am supposed to do to protect it. Will the government try and steal it from me in taxes? Will my credit card companies (who, let’s be honest, I do not always pay on time) come and snatch it out from underneath me? Or will my good for nothing boyfriend drink it away? What should I do? I am freaked!!!
– Losing It Over Winning It

Dear Losing It Over Winning It,
Well well well, I don’t often get asked for advice on good news. Congrats! It’s nice to know that when we all spend our well-earned toonies on a ticket at least someone is winning and it’s not all a sham, but I digress. One thing I am not is a financial advisor – Lordy Lord I am most certainly not! But, we do have amazing financial advisors at EFAP – not for profit so they will give you unbiased advice and help you make plans for your windfall. So, give us a call at 1-800-505-4929 and we can refer you over at no cost.

And what do I think that you should do, knowing I am totally out of my expertise here? Well, getting rid of your debt is always a good thing – a tad boring, but very wise. Maybe buy someone you love a little something? And what about that special thing that you have been eyeing but you can’t justify buying? Well now you can, girlfriend! Enjoy this wonderful prize but do get some help to manage it, otherwise having money might begin to feel as onerous as not having it. Well, probably not, but it was a good wrap up. And about that boyfriend that you mention at the end – I am thinking that he is maybe the subject of another Dear EFAP…for now, enjoy your win! Onward cash queen!
