Clean Commuter & Wellness Challenge – Week 1!

The Clean Commuter & Wellness Challenge kicked-off on Monday, May 25th with some slightly overcast weather but this did not dampen the energy & enthusiasm of our CCWC participants!

Kudos

With well over 500 staff from across PHC, FH, PHSA and VCH committing to the Clean Commuter & Wellness Challenge, we’re off to a great start.

Who is in the challenge?

Over the 3-week challenge, CCWC commuters will be using transit, cycling, walking, riding scooters and carpooling.

Some people signed-up because they already have a clean and active commute – known as Avoiders. Others got involved to try something new and see whether they can leave their car at home and take alternative options, even once or twice a week – this group competes as Reducers. And for the first year, we also have a category of people joining the challenge as self-propellers, calculating Top-Calories Burned!

A snap-shot of some of the teams & individuals in the CCWC:

• PHSA is leading the way in terms of emissions reduced by people getting out of their cars and onto the bike path or walking. So far 19 kg GHG’s reduced by PHSA!
• Or top ‘self-propellor’ is riding 52km per day and will burn 6,920 calories in their commute to and from work in the first week! Wow.
• We have some return teams from last year. Welcome back to: Meerkats 2.0, Mindful Commuters, Spinning Falcons….still spinning, Gang Green, and Raven Song has expanded with even more teams this year!
• Funniest & creative team name shout-outs to: “Way to Go, Escargots!”, “RCH Rehab Scrambled Leggs”, “The Lion Trainers”, “The Kidney Kiddies”, “Concrete Jungle”, and “Spiritual Care-bears”.

Are you registered?

Whether you want to get fit, have fun, or win great prices…it’s not too late to register as an individual or gather a team together and sign-up.

We will be posting inspiring stories of folks who are feeling the benefits of riding a bike, walking or taking transit to work – not just on the environment but on our physical health and the health of our communities.
