Engagement contest winners announced!
Remember when we asked you to share what engagement means and your best day at work for a chance to win and iPad mini or a pop-up party for your team? Join us in congratulating the winners and all the staff who took time to participate and shared their insightful thoughts on engagement at VCH.
iPad winners
Csaba Magyar, Rehab Assistant at Minoru Residence in Richmond and Rosemary Hill, Wound Ostomy Nurse at Lions Gate Hospital were randomly drawn from all the staff that shared their thoughts on camera and awarded a brand new iPad mini!
Csaba explained in his interview that engagement is about having your opinion heard; “It means somebody actually listens and cares about what employees have to say because we are the frontline soldiers – we see first-hand what the patients do, how they are doing, how they are improving or not improving…” Well said Csaba, we have to feel like our opinion matters and is important to be fully engaged in our work.
Rosemary shared her best day at work which was about providing the best care for our patients, “It’s about taking an opportunity to remove suffering and figuring out a plan of care for our patients so they know there is going to be good things happening to them for their wound and ostomy.”
Pop-up party winners
Congratulations to Patsy Aplas, Jodi Meacher and Debbie Brow who were selected as the winners of the pop-up parties after commenting on the ‘what engagement means’ and ‘best day at work’ videos on VCH news. We received over 60 comments from staff across VCH on the contest entry forms and VCH news. Their stories send an important message to all of us that team work drives engagement and we can accomplish more by working together as a team.
Patsy Aplas, Head Nurse at VGH JPOR said, “We are one of four teams in JPOR. I asked our team to fill out a putting people first card and the replies were amazing, “awesome team 3, members looking after each other. You make my day! HPB ROCKS!!Always fun working with Team 3, Working at VGH feels like being surrounded by family xoxox,” and many more comments like this.
Care givers taking care of care givers in one of the most stressful environments makes best patient care possible!!
I am so proud to work with these nurses.”
Sincerely Patricia Aplas, JPOR
Jodi Meacher, Registered Nurse at LGH Emergency said, “I work at Lions Gate ER and about two weeks ago we had 200 visits – this may not seem like a lot for some emergency departments, but for us, it is past capacity – we had a full waiting room, hallway stretchers, EHS teams waiting and people calling out in stretchers. Our team really stepped up and everyone was working together, being engaged and showing the compassion, caring and patience that we try to bring to work every day. I was glad when the shift was over and the front doors finally stopped opening every few minutes, but it was rewarding to know we took care of that amount of people together.”
Debbie Brow, Public Health Nurse at Richmond said, “Engagement is to be mindfully focussed and committed. Successful engagement is reciprocal between all who should be involved eg. staff, community partners and clients. It involves being inclusive and inviting all participants, listening to what they have to say and then building capacity. As a co-facilitator for a social skills gardening/cooking group for low assest youth, the success of the program is contributed to ongoing engagement. The community partners ongoing commitment, the weekly consistent contact with the youth to encourage attendance and full attention of the facilitators with youth each week at the garden is building the youths’ capacity and esteem. At the garden we engage youth by:
E-xample

Engagement is rewarding!!”

Thanks to everyone who participated in the contest and for showing us that engagement is important at VCH!
