Concussion in the Classroom workshop a great success

On October 19, GF Strong School Program Staff, in collaboration with GF Strong Rehab Centre Staff, hosted a presentation titled, “Concussion in the Classroom”. This presentation was well received by all who attended. The GF Strong School is a Provincial Resource Program, housed at GF Strong Rehab Centre. The focus of this program is to respond to the learning needs of students with acquired and congenital disabilities. The program’s mission is to integrate both the benefits of school and rehabilitation therapy, and to reintegrate students with newly acquired disabilities back to their home school communities. The School Program provides a critical link to a student’s home school, and School Staff participate as an integral member on all rehab teams within GF Strong Rehab Centre. School Program Staff provide teachers and schools with information and skills necessary for working with a student who has an acquired disability.

GF Strong School Program Staff developed this brochure titled “Teaching Kids with Concussion: A Guide for Classroom Teachers”

Attendees also learned about the developing brain and its functions; symptoms, recovery, management of a concussion; and return to school/sport protocol. A variety of up-to-date resources (iPhone/iPad apps), relevant for working with and supporting students with concussion was provided. Multiple perspectives were shared by the GF Strong Teacher, Robyn Littleford; OT, Kathy Wong; and PT, Catherine Chan. Participants commented that the presentation was a “perfect balance of both research and real life case studies,” which made the session “interesting and relevant”.
