Nurse-family partnership addressing intimate partner violence
Promoting the health and well-being of young, first-time mothers is the core of the work of Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) Nurses. VCH is in the middle of the BC Healthy Connections Project: a scientific evaluation of the Nurse-Family Partnership Program in BC. This research study is part of a series of international trials of NFP, which was initially developed and tested by randomized control trial in the United States. Recruitment of first time, mothers 24 and under into the study will continue until December 2016. Potential clients are recruited through public health, so refer any young, first time mothers to the VCH Prenatal Program.
As part of their ongoing education, the NFP Nurses received training on October 28 from Dr. Susan Jack who led the development of a nursing education program and intervention to identify and respond to low-income first-time mothers enrolled in the NFP exposed to intimate partner violence. In particular, the nurses were focussing on use of a danger assessment.
