Vancouver Punjabi Diabetes Education Program
According to Diabetes Canada and Population Data BC reports, prevalence of diabetes is high in South Asians and is continuing to rise. Biological susceptibilities along with lack of physical activity, and decreased consumption of fruits and vegetables is propelling the increased burden of the disease, which poses them at greater risk of co-morbidities including heart disease, kidney problems, and hypertension.
Currently, there is no Punjabi language specific diabetes education program available in the Vancouver area.
New pilot program
The Healthy Living Program has taken the lead in offering an accredited program after the successful completion of a pilot program in 2016. The new Punjabi Diabetes Education Program is in full swing as of early 2017. This is a unique, culturally and language specific diabetes education program for South Asian Vancouverites. The program builds skills, motivation and confidence in an effort to make effective diabetes management and lifestyle changes.
This group program delivered in Punjabi consists of 2 sessions (5 hours each) and is facilitated by a Registered Dietitian and a Registered Nurse/Pharmacist. Programs are held at South Community Health Center.
