Dr. Stephen Chung honoured with CLF award
At the LIVERight Gala on November 25, the Canadian Liver Foundation (CLF) celebrated one of our very own. The CLF presented Dr. Stephen Chung, Head of Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery at VGH, with a prestigious award recognizing his contributions to clinical patient care as well as liver health research and education.
“It was an honour to receive this award on behalf of a vast team of individuals committed to the care of patients with liver diseases,” he says.
A leading surgeon
This is not the first honour for Dr. Chung, who has received several awards recognizing his contributions to health care research and education.
As a leading expert in liver and pancreatic cancer surgery, liver transplantation and transplant immunology, Dr. Chung is a highly respected surgeon and acknowledged as a leader in the battle against liver disease. His skills and knowledge offer life-saving interventions to those with few other options, and he has given many patients the gifts of time and hope.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute in some manner to the well-being of my patients,” he says. “The biggest contribution I can make is perhaps offering hope to someone where none may have existed before.”
A celebrated researcher
In addition to providing exceptional patient-centred care, Dr. Chung is a celebrated researcher who has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and holds research grant funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
He is a member a number of scholarly societies including the Canadian Association of General Surgeons, the BC Surgical Society, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the American Hepatopancreaticobiliary Association, the International Liver Transplantation Society, the Pacific Coast Surgical Association and the Society of University Surgeons.
Congratulations to Dr. Chung on his CLF award. Past VGH honourees include Drs. Stephen Ho, Charles Scudamore and Eric Yoshida.
