Three VCH researchers have been named as Canada Research Chairs for their respective work in spinal cord injury (SCI), exercise and cognitive decline in aging populations, and Alzheimer’s disease. Canada Research Chairs are nominated by universities across the country and the award is given to outstanding researchers who are recognized as world leaders in their fields, and includes five to seven years of renewable research funding.
2012 Canada Research Chair recipients who conduct their research at Vancouver Coastal Health are:
Dr. Brian Kwon, researcher with ICORD spinal cord research program at VCH and UBC, orthopaedic surgeon at VGH, and associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at UBC. Dr. Kwon’s work is focused on establishing a framework for promising SCI therapies and subsequent translation into clinical practice. He will also continue his research into new ways of reliably predicting anticipated levels of recovery after SCI, using tests performed immediately following the initial trauma.
Dr. Teresa Liu-Ambrose is a researcher with the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility and the Brain Research Centre at VCH and UBC, and assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at UBC. Dr. Liu-Ambrose’s research lab, The Aging, Mobility and Cognitive Function Lab, focuses on defining the role of exercise in healthy aging and the prevention of cognitive and functional decline among seniors.
Dr. Weihong Song is a researcher with the Brain Research Centre and professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UBC. Dr. Song’s research lab focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease.
