A new chapter of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI): Open School has been established this fall; the first of its kind in BC. The IHI- UBC Chapter is part of the international, not-for-profit organization of health professionals and students and is dedicated to promoting patient safety and quality improvement locally in Vancouver and British Columbia.
With all of the benefits that modern health care is able to deliver; it is nevertheless unsettling that we cannot guarantee safety and consistency to patients who receive care. Incidence of institution borne infections, surgical and medication errors, and other shortcomings are within our control if we know what to look for and where to focus our attention. While professional programs focus on developing appropriate training and skills and acquiring the necessary knowledge, they sometimes lack information on how to deliver and ensure quality of care. This is where the Open School comes in.
The goal of our IHI Open School Chapter is to bring together health professionals and students from across all disciplines, foster a culture of quality and safety in patient care through study and discussion, and advance collaborative, quality improvement initiatives across the province. Ultimately, it is hoped that the efforts of the Open School will lead to a change in practice and an improvement in the relationship between patients and professionals. Health care touches everyone, and the necessary improvements and solutions will be the result of everyone’s participation and effort.
The IHI-UBC Chapter is hosting its first event at VGH and we hope you can join us!
