VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation has launched an 8-week public awareness campaign “Make Mental Health Matter” with key media partners to raise funds for the new Mental Health Centre at VGH, to be named the Joseph & Rosalie Segal Family Health Centre.
The provincial government recently announced $57 million in funding for the Centre. Total capital costs are estimated at $82 million, and VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation has committed $25 million including a lead gift of $12 million from Joseph and Rosalie Segal.
The Foundation needs to raise an additional $10 million to reach our fundraising goal.
“This new facility is vitally important to mental health patients and their families. We are grateful for the commitment from the provincial government and for the contributions from our donors. As we officially launch our public campaign for the remaining $10 million needed, we hope the public and corporations will join us in reaching our fundraising goal,” said VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation interim president and CEO Barbara Grantham.
The new Centre will replace the outdated 70-year old heath centre facility at VGH. It will include 100 private rooms on eight floors, and will provide a safer, healthier environment for patients and the outstanding team of mental health professionals who support them. Groundwork is expected to start this fall with opening projected for spring 2017. The Centre will be constructed on the current site of VCH’s Willow Chest Centre on the VGH campus.
The campaign will include a full-page story in the Vancouver Sun every Friday and weekly radio interviews on CKNW’s World Today show, highlighting the impact of mental health in our community and featuring many of our mental health experts.
