Dr. Anthony Chow, retired researcher with VCH Research Institute and clinician with Vancouver Coastal Health, has been honoured with the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease (AMMI) Canada. The award recognizes Dr. Chow’s outstanding career as an infectious disease physician who is nationally and internationally acknowledged as an exemplary researcher, teacher, mentor, and leader.
Dr. Chow is recognized for his know-how in antimicrobial therapy as well as his expertise in the identification of conditions such as toxic shock syndrome, sepsis, septic shock, anaerobic infections.
Dr. Chow contributed to the VCH research and clinical communities in many ways including:
- As a research scientist with VCH Research Institute’s Immunity and Infection Research Centre
- The establishment of the first accredited Infectious Disease Training Program in Canada
- The establishment of the first antimicrobial stewardship programs in North America with the help of the VGH Pharmacy – leading to improved quality of care and reduced antibiotic costs
- The development of the first outpatient intravenous antibiotic program in BC
- As leader of the Canadian Bacterial Diseases Network Centre of Excellence and the CIHR Training Program for Translational Research in Infectious Disease – both based at VGH
- As a founding partner of the UBC Experimental Medicine Graduate Program and Director of the UBC MD/PhD Program based at VGH
