How does it work?

Developed for the Lower Mainland Health Authorities by the Pembina Institute <http://www.pembina.org>, Clean Commuter is an online calculator tool and campaign that allows employees to calculate the carbon emissions related to their commute using an interactive, web-based platform. It also aims to increase employee engagement and health by creating new opportunities for Lower Mainland Health Authorities staff to participate in the organization’s sustainability initiatives.

Did you know?

Some of the highlights from our 2012 Clean Commuter Challenge include:

  • 11 teams and more than 400 staff from all four health authorities participated
  • Our most impressive team reduced their carbon intensity (g/km) by 55%
  • Collectively, participants reduced their GHG emissions by 48%
  • 294 sustainable commuting goals were made
  • PHSA staff grew their walk-to-work kilometers by more than 40%
  • FHA staff reduced their number of kilometers driven by almost 40%
  • VCH staff increased their kilometers biked by 70%
  • PHC staff grew their kilometers travelled by transit by 36%

How does it work?

The Clean Commuter tool will:

  • Measure your commuting footprint based on where you live and the way you chose to commute during a given week
  • Assign you a leaf rank  that indicates how green a commuter you really are
  • Offer you the chance to set specific goals that help reduce your footprint
  • Provide tips and resources that make it even easier to be a clean traveller
  • Award weekly prizes for participation and for those who change their commuting behaviour (“Top Reducers”), as well as those who continue positive commuting behaviour  (“Top Avoiders”).
