Pink Shirt Day 2013 at the South Community Health Centre

Wear pink on Wednesday February 26

February 26 is Pink Shirt Day. VCH will be using this day to promote a respectful workplace and to raise awareness about its enhanced Respectful Workplace policy and new help and resources.

“We are encouraging staff and physicians to wear a pink shirt on February 26 to demonstrate their support for a respectful workplace,” said Wayne Balshin, executive director of Employee Relations.*

What is workplace bullying?

Workplace bullying is defined as targeted inappropriate comments or conduct causing the other person to be humiliated or intimidated. Workplace bullying may be an isolated incident, but is more often persistent, occurring over a period of time.

Are you being bullied or disrespected?

If there is someone behaving in a way that offends or intimidates you, take a stand against the bullying and bring your concerns forward immediately by either:

  • Having the conversation with the individual causing the concern to make them aware that his or her behaviour is not acceptable
  • Communicating your concern to your manager/supervisor/department head

Remember, a person may not be aware that their behaviour is offensive and most will change the behaviour once they are aware of the concern. However, if you choose not to or are unable to speak to the person directly, other options are being made available as part of the new Respectful Workplace policy being launched next week–watch for new information and resources.

What to do

  • Wear pink on Wednesday, February 26 to show your support for a bully-free workplace*
  • Watch for the new policy and resources being announced next week

*Dress restrictions may apply in certain work areas—check with your manager. VCH cannot supply shirts.
