Earth Hour: Saturday, March 29

Earth Hour takes place this Saturday, March 29th, 2014.

Join millions of individuals across Canada and the world in turning off the lights for one hour from 8:30 – 9:30 p.m on March 29.

Earth Hour is the single largest, symbolic mass participation event in the world. Created as a way to mobilize people to reflect and take action on climate change, Earth Hour now inspires a global community of millions. 7,001 cities and towns across 152 countries and territories will switch lights off for an hour as a massive show of concern for our impact on the environment.

Power in numbers

In 2013, British Columbians saved 136 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.95 percent during Earth Hour last year – the equivalent of turning off about 10 million 12.5-watt LED light bulbs. This was a jump in savings from the year before!

The community with the highest reduction in consumption – 9.8 percent savings – was Comox and Courtenay.  In total, 91 communities across BC registered their participation in Earth Hour, 2013.

Help make sure that 2014 is another great success by switching off all non-essential office lights and unplugging non-essential equipment before leaving your workplace at the end of this work week.

Reminder: Our focus is on non-essential lights and equipment only – essential services that require electricity will not be affected.
