VCH to launch online therapy service

VCH is working to launch a new online therapy program that combines online learning modules with therapist-assisted cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). This service will initially be available to VGH inpatient psychiatry clients through a demonstration project and will subsequently be rolled out across the health region.

Inspired by similar services in Australia and Saskatchewan, this will be the first online therapy program with made-in-Canada content. The project is underway thanks to a generous donation by the Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation, a longtime leader in raising funds and awareness for mental health issues. The new Kelty Online Therapy Service at VCH is expected to launch in late 2014.

Evidence based

Studies in other jurisdictions have shown that therapist-assisted online CBT is as effective – in some cases even more effective – as traditional face-to-face CBT. The Kelty Online Therapy Service at VCH will initially provide evidence-based psychotherapy services to patients within Vancouver Coastal Health. The service will allow for online CBT between patients and their CBT certified psychotherapists. Patients and families as well as family practitioners will have a variety of options to access program materials and services online. The Kelty Online Therapy Service at VCH will improve access and increase capacity to mental health services throughout the Vancouver Coastal Health region.
