Learn how to help prevent breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canadian women, and is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. There are 24,400 new cases estimated for 2014, with more than 5,000 estimated deaths. Many women believe that heredity is the most important factor in developing breast cancer and not much can be done to prevent the disease. In fact, genetic factors account for only five to 10 percent of diagnoses, and nearly half of all breast cancer diagnoses are due to preventable, non-genetic factors!

Want to know what you can do to prevent breast cancer? Come to a Breast Cancer Prevention Workshop on November 14th at Lions Gate Hospital to learn how you can improve your breast cancer risk profile. This free, one-hour session, led by Tracey Mager, a Dietician and Lifestyle Counselor at the Breast Cancer Prevention & Risk Assessment Clinic, will provide participants with an objective assessment of their risk, as well as tools and information to help them reduce their risk.

Through community clinics throughout the province, as well as individual appointments at BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre, the Breast Cancer Prevention & Risk Assessment Clinic has helped more than 1,000 women in British Columbia and across the country reduce their risk for breast cancer. Women who have an increased risk based on breast cancer genetics will be referred to the BC Cancer Agency.
