Prediabetes and diabetes screening project looking for candidates

This second phase in the Prediabetes and Diabetes Screening Project is looking for 300 participants of Caucasian origin. The study will assess risk factors for prediabetes and diabetes in adults aged between 20 to 39 years old.

Who can participate?

You are eligible for this study if you:
Have both biological parents from White/Caucasian origin
Are between 20-39 years of age (male or female)
Have NOT been diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes
If you are female, you are NOT pregnant

What is involved?

You will:

  • Complete the CANRISK questionnaire (14 questions) to determine your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Drink a concentrated sugar drink.
  • Provide two blood samples that will be taken from your arm before and after the sugar drink.

How will you benefit from participating?

Participants will benefit in the following ways:

  • You will receive personalized information about your risk factors for diabetes.
  • You will learn about ways to prevent diabetes through lifestyle change options.
  • You will receive information about community resources to support you to make healthy lifestyle changes, and an honorarium ($50) as appreciation for your time and effort.

When does this study take place?

Recruitment is ongoing until December 2014.

Where does this study take place?

You can do the blood test at a mobile lab session organized by the study team at a specific time and location, or you can make an appointment with appointed laboratories (Lifelabs and BCBiomed) and get the blood test done at one of their locations at a time convenient for you.

You can fill out the CANRISK questionnaire yourself, with a team member/project staff over the phone, at the Pacific Spirit Community Health Centre, or a mobile lab session.
