Step away from your chair – and walk. Regularly

Walk or run: Which is better for your health?

Beyond losing weight, walking can be super beneficial to your health. Researchers looked at data from the National Runners’ Health Study and the National Walkers’ Health Study and found that people who expended the same amount of calories— whether walking or running—saw similar health benefits in terms of reduced risks of hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and better cardiovascular health.*

But even the most time-efficient athletes might want to think twice before heading ouit for a jog. Running puts more stress on the body and increases the risk of injuries like runner’s knee, hamstring strains, and the dreaded shin splits (which plague even the most consistent runners).

Regular cardio (at any speed) can help keep the body healthy, not to mention improve mood and energy levels.

And of course, some people simply prefer to take things slow and take a friend along for a brisk walk. If you are planning a New Year’s Resolution of becoming more active, consider joining us at the VGH Commuter Centre for our weekly WednesdayWALK – setting out for a 30-min walk at 12:15pm. (Shine or Rain! …loaner umbrellas provided.)
