Parent as partner in care
An Assessment and Treatment Team with Tertiary Mental Health and Addictions at Willow Pavilion found tremendous value in the involvement of family in care planning.
Greg’s journey
When Greg Tatchell’s daughter Allanna had to make the transition from child and youth mental health to the adult system, Greg found he did not have the level of involvement he was expecting. Greg was used to much more involvement in Allanna’s care planning than he initially experienced at Willow Pavilion’s Tertiary Mental Health program. Through advocacy and dialogue Greg found the level of engagement he was looking for and the team learned that Greg’s involvement was key to Allanna’s progress. In short the team has transformed, with Greg—once an outsider—now a vital member. Allanna has made excellent progress with her health and their story is a great example of how care teams can learn and grow and provide better care through the full involvement of family members. As part of the team, Greg participates in program planning with the Tertiary Mental Health & Addictions Adult Leadership Committee and attended the 2014 Conference of the Institute for Patient and Family Centered Care.
