I work as a nurse for Strathcona Mental health and my best day at work happened last week. I was the captain for our bike to work week team. There were some staff that were avid cyclists already and there were a few when I approached them were not interested at all. I am also a Green + Leader so I am constantly thinking of such things such as clean and active transportation and waste diversion in our office. I love that I can do my part in my work place to help my passion for helping the environment. So my best day at work was when the one coworker who declined to bike to work because she has a dog she brings in and also she stated she would not wear a helmet. I was so pleasantly shocked when I was waiting at the bike storage for the riders and she came riding in…with her dog in a basket and herself wearing a helmet! It was such a great feeling, pride in my co-workers! Also another co-worker made the ride all the way from Richmond which took him an hour. The camaraderie with my team increases the happiness I feel when working in such a busy and stressful team. I’m grateful for my colleagues and managers for such support.

When I was nursing, each day was the best day ever especially when I heard residents living in care homes say “thank you” or “I’ve missed you” or “I was wondering when you were going to be back” as I have built relationships with these elders giving them hope and a reason for them to be themselves. Putting a smile on thier faces or seeing them do things they thought they could not do makes me think “I’ve made a difference in their lives” and made it matter.
Now, as a leader, I hear the same words that include the staff that I work with. Building relationships and making the work matter for one person makes my day. I have many of those and will keep them going as I strive for everyday to be the “bestest” ever!

Every day was the best day at my work when I had a great team of colleagues and a wonderful supervisor working at my work place. There was lot of collaborative work and fun everyday. I could work with clients and also have laughter with my co-workers. Every day… work was like spending time with family and friends. Miss those days…..

I love it when we play – like we had a small Easter egg hunt after a meeting, played musical chairs at a meeting, or when spontaneous Nerf wars break out. That fun stuff can really bring a team together, and is a good mental health break for when things get tough. Work hard, play hard!
