Patrick, registered nurse, says engagement is about developing relationships.

Patrick, Registered RN for the Cardiac Care Unit at VGH, explained the value of engagement in motivating employees by saying, “I think it’s about trying to establish a relationship with the employees so not only do they feel at home – given that this often is their second home – but also to make them feel important. If we all realize that we have a voice within our own agency it really increases our motivation and morale.” This is important for all of us to remember as we all have a role in creating an engaging culture at VCH.

    Engagement:

In terms of this term in a “workplace” setting, engagement means staffs are fully committed to their job. They enjoy what they do on a daily basis and gives a little extra as they really want to not because they had to. Being engage means I’m happy to be there so that’s why I give my full attention to making/ helping other’s work or task as smooth as possible. If the entire team is “engaged” it will show in the stats and how efficient we are as a whole.

To me employee engagement is a truthful relationship between the organization and the employee. They are two sides of the same coin. If an organization has to achieve it’s goals and objectives none other than the employee can help achieve this.
It is a mutual trust that each one will respect their roles and do what is entrusted to them to the best of their ability.
Employee engagemnet also means understanding the needs of the employee, to ensure a better working platform and see the employee as a human being rather than a high tech machine.
The world has become a very competetive and complicated place to live in. Each person has their “life” and many of us never get to know the “real person” because we wear a mask and walk about. It is here that the employer can help by reaching out and being understanding. The moment this happens we see better work ethics and results. Harmony exists. Organizational goal and objectives start moving in the right direction.

What engages me is the ability for me to combine my personal interests with that of VCH’s and having support of my team managers to implement changes. I think being able to harness my personal self into my work role creates engagement. My interests are with zero waste and active and clean transportation. I joined the green + leader program which I never knew existed until I searched around for it. I’ve since created a “green team” at my site and it includes my clinical supervisor. To have that management support really makes the team feel our goals are valued. This is in line with the company’s reputation and interests. Also on the same vein, our team has received bicycles to use for home visits to minimize car use. This decreases costs to the organization in parking and mileage and increases our fitness, and enjoyment in the workplace. I feel the more projects we do such as this, the more we are engaged as staff in this organization. Especially in healthcare, we need to be leaders and to have employees take on the responsibility to improve to more sustainable and eco-friendly and cost-effective ways to do our work. This benefits both VCH and staff. The team as a whole has been such a great support and the camaraderie we have makes work such a happy environment. It has given me renewed energy and motivation as well in my clinical practice and I feel less stressed and burnt out since cycling to work and for work.

Good leadership and creating a culture of excellence is what engages our team. Staff have a say in many of the decisions on our unit. It makes a difference.
