Changes to accessing nursing vacancies
VCH is pleased to announce a joint commitment with BCNU and the provincial government to hire 235 Registered Nurses for specialty training programs such as Critical Care, Emergency and Operating Rooms. These new permanent positions are being posted and made available to staff as training opportunities.
As current VCH nurses move to the new training opportunities, this will also result in additional job opportunities for Casuals, New Grads and Employed Student Nurses.
New Expression of Interest process
A new Expression of Interest (EOI) hiring and selection process for unit regular staff will be implemented on February 4, 2016 to ensure existing staff have first access to vacancies within their unit. In addition, casual nurses will have first access to temporary vacancies in their unit.
Expression of Interests will be sent to your VCH email. Please ensure you have an active VCH email account and you check it regularly to access vacancies on your unit. If you do not have an active VCH email address, please ask your Manager to get a email set up for you as soon possible. If you need help accessing your email outside of work (home/smartphone), please refer to the instructions on VCH Connect.
Positions not filled through an Expression of Interest will be posted on the VCH internal job posting site.
New posting process
To help fill the 235 training opportunities and all other vacancies quicker, VCH and BCNU have agreed to the following changes which are being implemented as of February 4, 2016:
• DC1 and CH1 regular full time vacancies will first be offered by Expression of Interest to full time nurses in the home unit where the vacancy arises.
• DC 1 and CH1 regular part time vacancies will first be offered by Expression of Interest to part time nurses in the home unit where the vacancy arises.
• DC1 and CH1 temporary vacancies will first be offered by Expression of Interest to casual nurses in the home unit where the vacancy arises.
• Expression of Interest vacancies will be sent to the Nurses’ work email by Recruitment Services. Nurses that want to be considered for the vacancy must reply to the Expression of Interest email within 3 days (72 hours) and include their employee ID number and contact phone number.
• Expression of Interest vacancies will be awarded to the senior applicant. No interviews will be conducted.
• Nurses who are awarded a vacancy (Expression of Interest or posted) will have 24 hours to accept or decline the offer. The offer will be communicated by phone and to the nurse’s work email address.
• Casual nurses who are awarded temporary vacancies (Expression of Interest or posted) will be treated as regular nurses with benefits but will not be considered for other temporary vacancies that overlap with their current temporary position. Temporary positions can have duration of up to 14 months.
• New grads (graduated within past 18 months) will be considered first for temporary vacancies that are not filled by unit specific casuals. Manager can appoint a casual new grad from a different unit or an external new grad into the temporary position. Interviews may be conducted and seniority is not a factor for selection of new grads.
• Regular vacancies not filled by Expression of Interest will be posted across VCH for 7 days (previously 10 days). Vacancies will be posted as per the Collective Agreement including conducting interviews.
• RNs awarded speciality training positions will be required to remain in that speciality as a regular RN for 18 months after completion of training.
