Dear EFAP: falling for munchies
Thank you to those who have written to “Dear EFAP” for input on your dilemmas. As you are aware, we read every inquiry that comes in but we are only able to print a small selection of responses. Our “pithy” answers are modeled after the lighter hearted Dear Abby style and are grounded in common sense. If your issues require a more personalized level of support, please call EFAP (1-800-505-4929) and we can confidentially book you a counselling appointment with a senior level therapist.
We welcome all inquiries – please submit these to dear.efap@efap.ca. All printed responses use the anonymous descriptor that you sign your inquiry with and do not reveal any identifying information. Our goal is to support you through insight and common sense.
Below is our response to the next selection – enjoy!
Dear EFAP
I can feel that now that the weather is getting chillier, I’m getting hungrier and I’m eating more – I think it’s because I don’t have to fit in shorts and a t-shirt every weekend. I’m starting to feel anxious about it, and my jeans are getting tighter and I just don’t feel great about my body. What should I do? I want to do something about this!

Dear Broad with the Bulging Bod
Well, I’m not a dietician or a family doctor, my friend, but the good news is that VCH’s benefits cover dietician services for employees – I recommend that you consider giving one a call. They can help you determine what might be the best route for you in terms of nutrition and eating habits.
It’s always a good idea as well to check in with your family doctor on matters such as these. As for the psychological side of this issue, EFAP has therapists who can confidentially speak with you about body image and some of the anxiety that you mention you’ve been dealing with. Please know that you are not alone on this one, and give us a call – we’re here to help.
