On September 19th, North Shore Health Research Foundation (NSHRF) presented research grants to three doctors at Lions Gate Hospital (LGH). Each will use the funding to conduct a medical research study on the North Shore, advancing knowledge and improving medical procedures in their area of specialty. Selected studies were chosen on their potential to greatly benefit health outcomes of NorthShore residents, and beyond.
2012 recipients include:
- Dr. Gary Andolfatto, attending physician and research director, LGH Emergency Department, received $10,000 to further his study of Procedural Sedation and Analgesia. Findings from previous, related research have had impact in his field across North America and internationally. Dr. Andolfatto is also a past recipient of the VCH Research Institute 2010 Mentored Clinician Scientist Award for his research on procedural sedation and analgesia.
- Dr. Richard Lewis, general surgeon and clinical researcher, LGH, received a $5,400 grant to compare results of laparoscopic versus open colon surgery. Results of this study will be used to support the advantages of using laparoscopic surgery.
- Dr. Paul Sugar, palliative care physician, LGH, received a grant for $4,721.50 for the study of the prevalence of hypogonadism in male palliative care patients at home and community care facilities in North and West Vancouver. The study will determine the potential for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT).
