VCH Coastal staff and managers have a great opportunity to learn the basics of the Incident Command System, a key tool for managing health care operations during an emergency such as a natural or manmade disaster.

Emergency management training offered for Coastal staff

Emergency and disaster events aren’t uncommon here in Coastal, with parts of our region prone to natural events such as flooding and wildfires on top of human-caused events such as vehicle accidents and spills.

To help prepare staff to manage during these events, Health Emergency Management has arranged a free, all-day introductory course on the Incident Command System (ICS). The ICS100-Intro to Incident Command System (I-100) course is recommended for nurses working in the Emergency Department as well as managers or directors and is designed to give participants a basic understanding of:

  • The emergency response management system used by the Health Sector within British Columbia
  • The purpose and organizational structure of an Incident Command Post (ICP) as well as common activities – such as communication flows – and processes used
  • Responsibilities for the primary functions within a health sector ICP

The course is taking place:

Tuesday April 29 9 am – 4 pm

Evergreen Boardroom EOC (LGH campus).

To sign-up visit CCRS and search for ICS or use this link: ICS100-Intro to Incident Command System (I-100)

NOTE: The Incident Command System (ICS) is a model for command, control and coordination of emergency response at an emergency site. It provides a way of coordinating the efforts of agencies and resources as they work together toward safely responding, controlling, and mitigating an emergency incident.

Your article reminded me that we have a big white cupboard in our Rehabilitation Department at LGH labeled ‘Emergency Supplies.’ It’s been there for several years. We don’t know what’s in it or whether it should be checked & contents updated. Who should we contact to find out what is our department’s responsibility? Thank you.
