A friendly bookmark contest

2284 elementary age students entered the 2014 Richmond bookmark contest “I’m a friend.  Be a friend!”

This year’s slogan supports the Richmond Children’s Charter, Right no. 7:  Richmond children have the right to choose friends.  It goes the next step implying that children also have the responsibility to be a friend.

Eight winners were carefully chosen by representatives from public health nursing, library, school district and Richmond’s COO, Mike Nader and Diane Bissenden, Director of Population and Family Health. Other partners include Richmond Children’s First’s and the City of Richmond.

Each of the 8 students receives a $75 gift certificate to Indigo/Chapters and their bookmarks are professionally printed and distributed throughout the community.

The bookmark contest is truly unique; not only do students showcase their creative talents to the community; it also offers an opportunity for Public Health to engage with students in a fun and interactive way about health.

The Richmond Bookmark Contest was created 10 years ago by Public Health nurses as a fun, creative and unique way to engage children in health prevention and promotion. Since then, a number of community partners have become involved in helping us promote, judge and celebrate the program, including: The Richmond Library, The Richmond School District, The City of Richmond and Richmond Children First.
