3 Medicine Sub Acute welcomes visitors to an Open House
“You see patients coming in—they can barely walk, barely move – and the next thing you know, they’re walking out the door.”
This, in a nutshell, describes the successful work that takes place on 3 Medicine Sub Acute, a unit created from Bedmap Redesign that contains an activation area and multipurpose room for group work and socialization programs. The unit provides an environment where activity and independence is promoted.
The 28-bed unit’s work and care philosophy was showcased in an afternoon Open House on January 29. It saw hospital staff and invited guests learn about how patients benefit from the new programs and activities now in place on 3 Medicine Sub Acute.
Improving care quality for patients
3 Medicine Sub Acute encourages the return to normal activities. Staff works with patients to maximize their independence in activities of daily living.
Patients suitable for the unit are encouraged to follow a schedule and participate in activities to enhance their physical, cognitive and functional recovery so they can safely return home or to the community.
Anticipated outcomes of 3 Medicine Sub Acute include reduction of hospitalization time and a reduction of readmission rates to hospital.
“I’m super excited about all the things we’ve done on 3 Sub Acute,” said Audra Leopold, LPN, 3 Medicine Sub Acute, whose feelings are echoed by colleague Jeri Fisher. “The team on this floor is great,” said Fisher, CPA. “It’s a really positive place for both patients and staff.”
Activity at the heart of rehab and care
The new Activation Room is the unit’s activities hub. Programs that take place in this space include group exercise classes, eating in a dining room and music programs. All are focused on patient recovery and transition home.
Donations helped transform the unit
Richmond Hospital, including 3 Medicine Sub Acute, has benefitted from $200,000 worth of donor-funded rehabilitation equipment from the Richmond Hospital Foundation.
Richmond Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary also contributed to the new unit, providing furnishings, an Arjo electric walker, ankle weights, thermabands, new walkers and an ergometer.
Staff, too, have dug deep on their own, donating simple games, cards, colouring books, puzzles and art supplies to ensure that patients have plenty of opportunity to stay mentally active while their preparing for transfer to an appropriate care setting.
What is Bedmap Redesign?
Richmond Hospital’s bedmap was redesigned last fall to ensure patients are placed in the right care location with the right care resources. Bedmap Redesign has enhanced our ability to provide patients with optimal care, leading to quality outcomes.
On 3 Medicine Sub Acute, the new bedmap has resulted in enhanced care that focuses on active therapy and recovery for sub acute patients.
