Coast Capital putts their way to record-breaking fundraiser for depression research
Coast Capital Savings’ 12th annual charity golf tournament raised a record–breaking $208,012 for depression research – bringing the grand total raised since 2002 to $1.6 million.
The credit union’s generous donations have allowed for the establishment of the Leading Edge Endowment (LEEF) Chair in Depression Research at UBC Hospital and supported ten unique research projects. Earmarked to support research and programs focused on eliminating the stigma around mental illness and promoting better mental health, Coast Capital’s contributions have had a significant impact.
“One in five Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime,” says Wayne Berg, Coast Capital’s Chief Commercial Officer and Honourary Chair of the credit union’s Charity Golf Tournament Committee. “With those numbers, it is safe to say that mental illness touches all of us in some way.”
From brain imaging and genetic-based studies on mood disorders, to the evaluation of new psychological treatments for depression, Coast Capital’s efforts have enabled the ongoing work at VGH and UBC Hospital, offering hope and healing to thousands of people across BC suffering from mental illness.
The sold-out tournament was held on Sept. 4 at Surrey’s Northview Golf and Country Club. This year’s platinum sponsors included CRI Canada, Desjardins Group, Fasken Martineau, SEI Investments, Landcor Data Corporation, and IDC Worldsource Financial; all of whom are dedicated to making mental health matter.
VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation is grateful once again to Coast Capital Savings and all their tournament sponsors, golfers and donors for making an impact on mental health and wellness in our community.
