Purdy Pavilion’s first Sports Day a slam dunk
On Friday, August 16, 2013, UBC Hospital’s Purdy Pavilion extended care facility held its first annual Sports Day for residents. The sports took place in the morning on all four floors of the facility. The activities included a 100-meter dash, five-pin bowling, an obstacle course, beanbag toss, puck pushing, basketball hoop, soccer and fish from a pool. Residents were encouraged to participate and challenge themselves by kicking a soccer ball standing versus sitting, completing a 100-meter dash by walking versus wheeling themselves, etc. Residents who were unable or not interested in participating were able to hold signs and cheer for their friends and/or roommates.
In the afternoon, an award ceremony MC’d by one of our very own residents took place in the garden room. Many prizes, donated by various individuals and establishments, were distributed. Gold, silver, and bronze prizes were awarded for each event. There were also prizes for our “special” categories such as Best Smile, Best Cheerleader, and Best Sportsmanship as well.
The residents and staff had a fantastic day, all made possible with collaboration from nursing staff, dietician, pharmacy and activity workers, rehabilitation assistants, occupational therapists and physiotherapists. A special thanks goes to the volunteers, some of whom spent the entire day with us, who helped make this event possible.
