Is VGH prepared for an earthquake?
Do you think VGH is prepared for an earthquake?
That is the question Royal Roads masters student Deanna Sykes is hoping to help us answer. She is currently involved in an international comparative study measuring hospital staff’s perception of earthquake preparedness.
Health Emergency Management BC and VCHRI are supporting this research study in the hopes of better understanding VGH staff’s perception of how earthquake prepared VGH is, and what we may do to better support our teams in responding to an earthquake when it happens.
Purpose of study
The main objective of this study is to assess how employees at VGH perceive their preparedness for the next major earthquake. This will be accomplished by identifying strengths and weaknesses in hospital preparedness based on our perceptions and knowledge. The results of this study will be combined with the results of an international study to help hospitals become more prepared to address the increased demands placed on employees after an earthquake. Most of the survey questions are multiple choice and there is an area where you can make suggestions for how management can help you become more prepared.
Who can participate?
This survey is intended for all persons working at VGH.
What is involved?
Completing a 15-minute online survey – with an option to enter a draw at the end of the survey to win a iPad mini or some emergency preparedness supplies. To participate click the link to the survey.
When does this study take place?

It seems a lot of training and planning is done that involves patient care staff so I believe they will all know what to do in the event of a major earthquake. I wonder, though, whether the support staff knows what to do. Many of us would be pleased to help but have no idea what that would involve, or whether our knowledge and skills will be put to use.
