When a patient’s broken wrist put her treasured jade bracelet at risk, one VGH nurse came to the rescue.

A nurse named Sharon

A nurse named Sharon …

So began the email a patient’s daughter recently sent us. She wrote to thank Sharon Askew, an LPN in the VGH Emergency Department. Here’s why:

Hi,

My mom was admitted to VGH Emergency after she was hit by a car. She had fractured her wrist and needed to have a cast put on, but she was wearing a jade bracelet that we were unable to remove.  She was most upset when she was told that the bracelet would need to be cut off and begged for someone to try and pull it off.  She had fractured her wrist, pelvis in several spots and her left orbital bone, so she was in a lot of pain — but all she wanted was someone to help her save her jade bracelet.

The emergency staff then found a nurse that seemed to have experience with such situations and was able to remove the bracelet, but not without a lot of hard work!!

My mom is now recovering well and would like to thank this kind nurse!

Sharon, the only Sharon in ER, is an amazing nurse that has graced our hospital for many years! She is a delight to work with and always has the most chipper bedside manner. Great to see this being shared!
