New bus is more than transportation for George Pearson residents

Thanks to funding from the Marpole Women’s Auxiliary and the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, residents at George Pearson Centre once again have the ability to get out-and-about and connect with their community.

A new bus, unveiled yesterday, can transport four residents in wheelchairs and four attendants. It means residents can take part in daily excursions; something they’ve been unable to do since the centre’s old passenger bus broke down last fall, leaving only 1995 Dodge van for resident outings.

Residents summed up their excitement over the new bus in a Thank You poster, scribbled with messages telling what the new vehicle means to them.

“Everything. It means a lot. Gives us freedom,” wrote Pat.

“It’s wonderful freedom to go to many new places that many of us have never had the opportunity to see,” wrote Christopher.

“Happiness. I get to go out and that makes me happy,” wrote Sandie.

New  excursions planned

The $85,000 specially equipped van will be used daily, both for in-city and out-of-town trips. First activity on the agenda:  the Elton John concert Sunday night. Shortly after, another resident will be taken over to Duncan for a long-overdue visit with his family.

“Being able to get out and maintain a connection to the community is huge for residents,” said Ron Steadman, Supervisor of Recreation Therapy at George Pearson Centre. “Everyone`s really stoked. They’ve been waiting for this.”

It is a wonderful bus that is sure to bring hours of enjoyment to our residents. Thanks very much to the Marpole Woman’s Auxillary, the UBC/VGH Hospital Foundation and our wonderful recreation department at George Pearson Centre – GPC would not be as happy a place without you!
