Funds from UA Local 170 have helped purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment for Richmond Hospital’s Pulmonary Function Lab. A new “breathing box” will help diagnose and assess lung disease, a serious and growing illness.

Lise worked tirelessly to reunite a family

When a seriously injured member of the Canadian Armed Forces found himself isolated, far from family and friends, one VGH nurse went above and beyond the call of duty.

The care and extraordinary efforts made by Lise Belanger, RN, and the VGH Spine Team were “nothing short of exceptional,” writes the Commanding Officer of Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Ottawa.

For more on this story, read on:

I would like to express my gratitude for the hard work done by the medical staff at Vancouver General Hospital, especially Lise Belanger, RN, and the team in the Spine Unit, for the care that was given to Leading Seaman H. S.

H. was admitted to Vancouver General with serious injuries in late December. In addition to the substantial medical challenges that were faced by your staff, H. also found himself isolated far away from friends and family. This was not only due to his military posting away from Toronto, but also because the treatment he needed was not possible near his friends and fellow sailors in Victoria.

Lise worked tirelessly to assist the military in reuniting H. with his family and friends. A diligent champion of H.’s best interest, she was a critical partner in the relocation of H. to Toronto. Coming in early, staying late and answering calls on the weekend became her normal routine while she was caring for H. She courageously navigated through the CAF [Canadian Armed Forces] health administration, ensuring that H.’s care needs were met. She often exceeded the normal scope of her duties, providing essential support to the Armed Forces personnel involved in H.’s care.

The care that this Canadian Armed Forces member received at VGH was nothing short of exceptional. Your medical staff, especially Lise and the Spine Team, demonstrated the very best qualities of diligence and compassion. Their efforts reflect the pride and professionalism of your exceptional facility. Please pass on my sincere gratitude for their efforts.

Respectfully,

J.A. Barnard
