Lessons from the frontline of Ebola

Dr. Francis Kateh, Deputy Minister of Health and Chief Medical Officer of Liberia, is coming to VGH to share his experiences from the frontline of Ebola, and everyone is welcome.

Appointed National Deputy Incident Manager, Ebola Response, Dr. Kateh, directed medical intervention for Liberia while Chief Executive Officer of the Jackson F. Doe Memorial Hospital – the country’s only haven for people with Ebola seeking care. An expert in disaster preparedness, Dr. Kateh will tell the story of eliminating Ebola, lessons learned and where his country is now.

On behalf of Liberia, Dr. Kateh will extend his sincere appreciation for the support given by Vancouver General Hospital and Vancouver Coastal Health. VGH staff helped conduct the first-ever neurosurgical medical mission in Liberia in April 2014 — and Ebola hit while they were there. When the epidemic resurfaced in Monrovia (the first time in a city), the poor health care infrastructure crumbled leading to closure of all hospitals around the country.
