“It looks like Santa crash landed in the Emergency Physician room!”
Receiving an unexpected gift is always a welcome surprise, but when a stack of presents magically appeared in the physician lounge of the VGH Emergency Department December 22, physicians likened it to a visit from Santa.
“The physicians in our Emergency Department are simply the best,” says Sarah Turner, head nurse. “They go above and beyond each day at work and the ED wanted to show our appreciation to them.”
Sarah explains that throughout the year ED physicians show their appreciation to staff by bringing in treats and contributing to the annual beach BBQ and Christmas party, even when they can’t attend due to work obligations. “Sometimes they get left out of group events, so we wanted to show how important they are to our team.”
In November, Sarah emailed staff asking if they would participate in a Secret Santa for Emergency Physicians (EPs). Each staff member could pick one of the 60 physicians and make or buy the EP a present. Within an hour more than 40 EPs were selected, and by the end of day every EP had his or her own personal “Secret Santa.”
“Some made sweaters and scarves, some baked goods, and some even catered to physicians’ hobbies, such as craft beer, hiking equipment and personalized golf balls,” says Sarah. “We also asked staff to sign 60 cards and by Christmas each EP had a card full of thank you messages. They were really quite heartwarming.”
Early the morning of December 22, Sarah and staff snuck into the physician lounge and deposited the presents and cards into a large pile. Afterwards, she emailed the EPs that Santa had left goodies for every physician because of their support, generosity “and simply being the best!”
The response from physicians was overwhelming. Over 45 messages of surprise and thanks filled Sarah’s inbox.
“It looks like Santa crash landed in the EP room!” replied Dr. Tracey Pickett, moments after the email was sent out. “I feel incredibly honoured to be a part of such a wonderful group. Thank you, each and every one of you, for being so welcoming, joyful and skilled. You are an amazing team!”
“Most amazing thing I’ve ever seen!!!” wrote Dr. William Lee. “Thanks everyone! It’s such a privilege to be with such a great group and with such amazing people! I’m honoured!”
Lori Korchinski, patient services manager, says the gifts speak to the comradery of the team. “The ED is a challenging place to work. It’s fast paced and unpredictable, so we rely on the leadership and support of our team. This was a wonderful way to show how much we care for each other and I hope to see similar initiatives like this one throughout the year.”
