Capacity Management Suite (CMS) update

Back on June 7, the Capacity Management Suite (CMS) — an upgrade of the Bed Management System (BMS) — went live at VGH and UBC Hospital. While CMS has required some configurations post-implementation, we’re pleased to share that the new system’s features are helping staff improve the flow of patients through our hospitals.

Improving flow with progress tracking and communications tools

The CMS Discharge and Transfer Milestones feature allows staff to electronically track a patient’s discharge or transfer progress in an easy-to-follow bar graphic next to the patient’s bed number. At a glance, staff can see which targets have been met and which are still outstanding.

Additionally, Patient Placement Indicators, like isolation information, are communicated across all CMS modules, so nursing, transport, and housekeeping staff have the information necessary to take appropriate precautions.

“I like how CMS is an interactive way to communicate real-time progress on patients to other units, flagging special needs, and identifying those patients requiring very little monitoring,” says Lori Quinn, head nurse, VGH Emergency Department. “CMS allows for continuous updates and leads to more efficient and effective bed flow.”

Your support made it possible

Deploying CMS across VGH and UBCH simultaneously was a significant undertaking. We’d like to extend a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped to make the transition a success, including User Acceptance Testers who put the system through its paces prior to go-live, Super Users who provided frontline support to their peers during the upgrade, as well as staff who completed online computer-based training in preparation for the change.
