For a smokin’ hot time at VGH

Vancouver firefighters from the 2017 Hall of Flame Calendar will be at VGH for a special appearance and calendar signing on Wednesday, November 2.

The 12 firefighters – representing their respective months – are generously volunteering their time to participate in the annual calendar project to raise funds for the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund and selected programs.

The BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund supports the VGH Burn, Trauma and High Acuity Unit, the province’s largest burn centre, providing a wide range of services to treat and improve the quality of life for people who suffer from severe burns and wounds.

Calendars will be available for purchase for $20 including tax. Cash only, please.

Date: Wednesday, November 2, 2016

Time: 11:30am – 1:00pm

Location: Main floor of Jim Pattison Pavilion, across from the VGH Gift Shop

For a Smokin Hot Time at VGH – Really!

I have to say that as a social worker at VGH I am disappointed yet again to see another Smokin Hot Calendar being put out by the Vancouver Fire Department. The sexual objectification of male or female bodies cannot be supported by this organization. A 2012 study of adolescents revealed that muscle-enhancing behaviors are pervasive among both middle school and high school-age males: More than a third reported downing protein powders or shakes in an effort to boost their muscularity; in addition, almost 6 percent admitted to using steroids and 10.5 percent acknowledged using some other muscle-enhancing substance. Long-term use of steroids is associated with depression, rage attacks, suicidal tendencies, and cardiomyopathies. And the negative effects can be particularly significant for adolescents, since their bodies are going through a period of major growth and development. Sexual objectification of our bodies is an equal opportunity discriminator. I am sure the Vancouver Fire Department can find another way to raise funds for the wonderful work done in the Burns Unit, and VCH/VGH needs to take an active role in stopping the discriminatory objectification of people’s bodies.
